Birthday

Every year they ask me ’gain

What would make my special day

And every year I’m forced to look

For something more than “love” to say

I have my family round me now

What more could I desire?

With smiles wide as crushing hugs

And witty tongues alive with fire

Last year I spent my special day

On a day-long drive across the earth

They laughed but it was fun for me

A happy day, my day of birth

I quickly, deftly, snuffed the flame

Atop the cake I didn’t eat

And just laid back to watch the night

Surround me as my special treat

They always try to make it big

And blow it up like a balloon

But they don’t know what I love best

Is gazing quietly at the moon
